Here are 10 Great Sanity-Saving Tips to help you get you through the Holidays

1. Lower Your Expectations

The sign on my desk, “Lower your expectations” reminds me that people, especially my family members, aren’t perfect and neither am I. Even though I’ve been through quite a few holiday seasons I haven’t seen perfection yet and don’t expect to, and to be really honest, I don’t ‘want’ to!!

Holidays are a time to celebrate with friends and a time for spiritual traditions. Holidays are a time to be open and grow, to accept new family members and friends as our life grows and changes.

As families grow and change traditions and rituals often change as well. Choose those you wish to hold on to and be open to creating new ones. If any family members can’t come to your house this year …. share pictures, emails and video.

At our house we insist that everyone shares what they’re thankful for. This is especially important for the children as it teaches gratitude. If you have any interesting rituals that you have on Thanksgiving, I’d really love to hear them.

2. Don’t overextend yourself

Plan ahead. Be organized so that you can actually enjoy the day. Make sure to have a lighter day on Friday to relax.

3. Drink responsibly

Drinking too much can lead to negative consequences both professionally and personally. Have one drink and take hours to finish it. Have a second drink and never finish it. I usually dilute my wine with Soda — that makes it last longer and if I can do this, you can too!

4. Give yourself plenty of time when traveling

Holiday travel always seems to increase stress. As a seasoned traveler my advice is to give yourself lots of time. Pack light. Plan plenty of time to get where you need to go and bring activities for any little ones. Accept what happens and make it into an adventure. Have fun!!

5. Set aside differences.

Try to accept family members and friends as they are– and not the way you would like them to be. Lower your expectations. Set aside grievances until a more appropriate time for discussion. And be understanding if others get upset or distressed or if plans don’t run smooth. Chances are they’re also feeling the effects of holiday stress.

6. Learn to say no.

Saying yes when you should say no can leave you feeling resentful and overwhelmed. People will understand if you can’t participate in every project or activity. It’s OK to say NO!

7. Don’t do the same old thing (unless you WANT to)

If the usual family gathering is causing stress, try something else. If you’re too overwhelmed to host, or just don’t want to do it, discuss other possibilities with family members. Be honest!

8. Reach out.

If you feel lonely or isolated, seek out community, religious or other social events. They can offer support and companionship. Volunteering your time to help others also is a good way to lift your spirits and broaden your friendships.

9. Seek professional help if you need it.

Holidays often bring up mixed feelings. So, despite your best efforts, you may find yourself feeling sad or anxious, unable to sleep, irritable and hopeless. If these feelings last for a while, talk to your doctor or visit your favorite Hypnotherapist (hint hint!!).

10. Hypnosis can help reduce stress, give you more energy and help you sleep.

Listen to a hypnosis recording before things get out of hand. Each time you listen you’ll go into a profound state of relaxation and feel so much more relaxed.
